Description Tips

What buyers actually want to know

  • Service history โ€” When was it last serviced? Are records available?
  • Owners โ€” How many previous owners? How long have you owned it?
  • Mods or upgrades โ€” Tyres, suspension, audio, anything aftermarket
  • Known issues โ€” Be honest about minor faults. Builds trust.
  • Why you're selling โ€” Upgrading, downsizing, moving overseas, etc.
  • Inclusions โ€” Tow bar, roof racks, car cover, manuals, two keys, etc.

Bad description vs good description

Great car, runs well, must sell. Make an offer. 2018 Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport. 78,000 km. Single owner, log book serviced at Toyota every 10,000 km. Recent service April 2026. Two keys, original owner's manual. Selling because of upgrade to family SUV. No mods, never smoked in. Minor stone chip on bonnet (see photo 12).

How to price your vehicle

  1. Check similar listings โ€” Search for the same make/model/year on Members Warehouse, Carsales, Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace. Find 5-10 similar to yours.
  2. Adjust for condition โ€” Above average kms = price lower. Below average kms = price higher.
  3. Add 5-10% wiggle room โ€” Most buyers will negotiate. Start slightly above your target.
  4. Watch the market โ€” If you get no enquiries in 7 days, drop the price 5%. Stale listings stay stale.

Response Tips

Fast responders sell faster

  • Reply to enquiries within 2 hours during the day
  • Be friendly and answer questions directly
  • Don't take offence at lowball offers โ€” politely decline or counter
  • Offer specific inspection times (e.g. "Saturday between 10am and 2pm") instead of "anytime"
  • Confirm appointments by SMS the day before
๐Ÿšฉ Red flags from buyers Watch out for: overseas buyers who can't inspect, offers above asking price, requests to pay via unusual methods, urgency to close without inspection. These are scams.
